Phnom Kulen is about 50 km from Siem Reap, roughly 1.5 hours by car. The drive itself is easy. The timing is not: the final climb up the mountain is a narrow one-way road with fixed hours, and getting it wrong can mean being turned away at the bottom. Here is how to get there, and when to leave.

The road up the mountain: timing is everything
The main road up Phnom Kulen is a narrow, one-way mountain road with a fixed schedule:
- 7:00 to 11:00am: traffic goes up only.
- After 11:00am: the road closes while the last vehicles finish the climb. If you are a few minutes late you are sometimes let through, but do not count on it.
- From around 11:45am: the road opens in the other direction so cars can come down.
Aim to reach the checkpoint at the foot of the mountain by 10:30am at the latest, which means leaving Siem Reap by about 9:00am. Earlier is better: you will beat the heat and the crowds at the waterfall.
New: the back road via Beng Mealea
There is now a second way up. A newer road connects the back side of Kulen Mountain to Beng Mealea temple, and continues on to Dam Dek and National Road 6. It is wider and better paved than the main road, with two-way traffic, so the one-way schedule does not apply.
If you are coming straight from Siem Reap, this road is out of the way. But if you also want to see Beng Mealea, it is the perfect link: the drive between the mountain and the temple takes about 40 minutes (25 km).
Ways to get to Phnom Kulen
1. Join a group tour (best value)
A shared minivan tour is the easiest and most affordable way to go. You are picked up at your hotel, ride in an air-conditioned van and have an experienced guide who handles the road timing and tickets. 2. Book a private tour
A private tour gives you your own vehicle and guide, so you set the pace. 3. Hire a private car or taxi
A car with a driver lets you explore at your own pace. But a driver is not a guide, and the price usually does not include your park tickets (drivers often sell them at a mark-up). Expect to pay extra to add stops like Kbal Spean, and to agree on a fixed return time in advance. For most travelers, a private tour is better value.
4. Ride a motorbike
Renting a motorbike in Siem Reap gives you freedom, but we do not recommend it unless you are an experienced rider:
- The climb is extremely steep. Automatic scooters like the Honda Click struggle, so you need a manual bike and experience on mountain roads.
- It is a long ride: riding safely, expect over two hours each way, which leaves less time on the mountain.
- If your bike breaks down, finding a mechanic on the mountain is almost impossible.
- In the wet season (roughly May to October), the road can be muddy and slippery.
If you do ride, wear a helmet, ride defensively and start early. Many travelers have told us a motorbike trip to Kulen was the low point of their holiday.
5. Hike to the top
Feeling active? You can get a driver to drop you at the foot of the mountain and hike up an old staircase and jungle trail to the top in about an hour, passing Preah Ang Choub Pagoda on the way. See our guide to hiking Phnom Kulen.
What about a tuk-tuk?
A tuk-tuk is not a practical option. The ride is long, hot and slow, and the mountain road is too steep for most tuk-tuks.
Before you go: checklist
- Buy a discounted ticket in town at the national park office at City Angkor Hotel, or bring $20 cash to pay at the booth at the mountain.
- Leave Siem Reap by 9:00am so you reach the road before it closes at 11:00am.
- In the wet season, check road conditions with your hotel or guide before you set off.
- Bring cash for lunch (around $5 a plate) and drinks.
- Pack swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, insect repellent and water.
- Dress modestly for Preah Ang Thom pagoda: cover your shoulders and knees.
